The Importance of settings in A Story

1. The setting of the first story is on a flight of staircase in Calcutta in the 1950s after the partition in India, the second in Sherlock Holmes' office in England in the 19th century, and the last within the higher echelons in the English society in the 19th century too.
2.The first story is set in modern times, the second in 18th-19th century while the third is in olden English days, which are also about the same as this range.
3. From the first paragraph in the first story, which depicts the living environments of a poor stairwell sweeper, I can know that the story is related to the description of a poor woman's life. The second would be about a detective's profession and escapades,as it shows the detective's past experiences. The third is about hapennings in the mercenary society whereby women's marriage were arranged by their parents who eyes for rich famillies, as the situation in the society then were stated.
4. The beginning of the novel indicated to us that the setting was Alabama, in America. Thus, we can predict that the story is related to African-Americans as many of them inhabit there.

  1. Setting of a story also involves where it has been placed e.g a country/city/town/village. When refers to a historical time period and probably events that happened at that time. These two put together give us an insight into the story, the factors that influence it and how it may ultimately turn out.
