Day4
I hurled my fist into the air and roared out in rejoice. After a few days' blood, sweat and toil, my hard work has ultimately come into fruition as I witnessed myself strumming out a perfect tune and picking up the notes of the song "Photograph".I was able to swap all the cords effectively and efficiently now.
The song flows in a sequence of C,G,B-Flat and F chords. What I am grappling with these few days is the G chord,as it requires the fingers to be bent to a great extent.Only a person with agile fingers can cope with this.Luckily,I managed to adapt to this and now my fingers have become more flexible than before as guitar is a instrument that relies on speed and precision. One error could be mean disaster.
What is more,we were split into groups for the performance, meaning that our strumming must be synchronised with that one of one another and also the beats of the drummers, which would add on to the confusion.
One shortcoming that the instructor spotted in us is that we will get panic-stricken whenever we missed a note and this could be a fatal wound in our performance. It would also ruin our morale for the rest of the song. Thus,he advised us to skip the beats we were uncertain of and proceed and prepare for the upcoming one.
The sound emitted from our guitar must also be as dynamic as that of the drum,he added.
Day5
Today,we are making our last preparations for the show.We seized our guitars the instant we reached the room and started strumming away, deeply concentrating on our beats without any chattering.Nobody would want to embarrass himself before the audience when he goes out of tune.
At ten 'o' clock, immediately after the break,we trudged to the SALT centre ,in which the drummers were based.A air of tension rented the surroundings for we knew that the final obstacle is looming over us.
We were herded to a tiny,air-conditioned room on the second floor. There,we meet lots of our classmates and they too look flustered like us.The drummers would take turns to perform solo while for the guitarists we would be in our groups of 5 to 8.I think more attention would be focused on the drummer as the drum 's sound id the most conspicuous one.I wonder how they were feeling then.
Both the guitar and drum instructors would conduct us along. The first group comprising of Sec 4 students kicked start the performance. The melody of the guitar coupled with the thunderous and sonorous boom of the drum mesmerizes us and carried us away and also showcased a excellent blend of the key western musical instruments.
Soon, the third group that is us were soon called before we realised. My heart palpitated wildly while shuffling towards the chair and my hands seemed to be sweating profusely. This was going to be the first time I am playing a guitar before a enormous bundle. But what could I do?The instructor gave the cue to start and we followed.I took it as naturally as I did during my practice and flanked what I have learnt on the guitar.Time zipped pat.Within a few minutes, it was all over and we heaved a sigh of relief. The sabaatical soon wrapped up in a matter of one hours.Though the process of learning is rather tedious and nerve-racking,this sabbatical is meaningful and fruitful for me as I have picked up another new skill and my interest in music is greatly heightened. If there was the guitar sabaatical in time to come,I would not hesitate to join it.
